60cm x 50 cm. Hand embroidered appliqué on short pile chenille. £5,450

The chambered nautilus (nautilus pompilius) has been sailing the deep since before the dinosaurs. That’s about 500 million years. The great survivor is the epitome of a self-contained existence and for that alone, a hero of mine.

This Sea Garden includes species loosely inspired by Adolphe Philippe’s 1897 illustration of marine algae, for the Larousse Encyclopedia. The red fan tree on the right echoes phyllophora membranifolia, while the striped organisms in the bottom corners are a take on padina pavonia. There’s a sun coral, some anemones, a couple of mushroom corals and a number of sea urchins.

The school of silver fish started life as simple lozenges painted on a sari. I gave them eyes and tails and helped them escape…

Framed by yacht builder Tony Williams, my father. Shown here with name plate (not fixed).

Price: £5,450

The 6cm deep box frame is built from solid sapele wood, a sustainable species of mahogany. The art glass filters out 70% UV, to protect the piece from fading. The name plate can be fixed on the front or the back. I have signed the piece on the back.
