Gem Corn
Third in this summer’s produce from the Allotment Series, my sell out debut collection in 2024. These will be on view at the South Hams Arts Forum’s Creative Passions Exhibition 2nd – 14th August 2026 in Thurlestone, Devon.
Gem corn is a variety of maize sometimes called flint corn because the shell of each kernel is so hard. It is ground into cornmeal and cooked as grits or polenta. The male flower is the ‘tassel’ on top of the stem and the female flowers, with the seed kernels, are topped with the ‘silk’.
